What happens when you take Retail Media Confessions off the virtual screen and into the halls of one of the industry’s biggest stages?

At Shoptalk, we expected the conversation to be dominated by AI agents and bold predictions about the future of retail media. And while those themes were certainly present, what we uncovered in candid, off-the-cuff conversations told a more nuanced story. One grounded in both what’s next and what needs to happen now.

In this special edition of Retail Media Confessions, recorded live from the Shoptalk conference floor, industry leaders share unfiltered perspectives on where retail media is headed and where it still has work to do.

A few themes rose quickly to the surface:

  • Measurement remains the growth unlock. Retail media networks still have significant runway, but more granular, transparent reporting will be key to sustaining investment.
  • Omnichannel is still more aspiration than reality. Despite years of conversation, true integration across channels remains elusive.
  • The human element still matters. Even amid AI hype, in-store experiences and human connection continue to play a critical role in influencing shoppers.
  • Trust will define the pace of change. Agentic commerce may be the future, but adoption depends on building confidence with consumers over time.

Taken together, these “confessions” reveal an industry at an inflection point.
