Coupons are a powerhouse for driving product discovery and brand loyalty. However, behind every seamless "beep" at the register is a sophisticated system of standardized identification. Using GS1 Standards ensures your coupons are validated correctly, reducing friction for both retailers and consumers.

To help you navigate this ecosystem, we’ve reordered and updated our most frequently asked questions based on expert feedback to help you build a foundation for growth

What is a GS1 Company Prefix (GCP)?

The GS1 Company Prefix is a unique identification number licensed to your company. It serves as the foundation for all your product and coupon identifiers. Think of it as your company’s "fingerprint" in the global supply chain; it identifies the brand owner responsible for the product and the identification used for associated coupons.

Note: To obtain a GCP, you must license it directly from GS1 US.

Why does the length of my GS1 Company Prefix matter?

The length of your prefix is a critical business decision because it determines your capacity for growth.

Shorter Prefixes:

  • Allows your company more flexibility because it leaves additional room for you to assign unique numbers to individual products.
  • Usually suited for companies with larger or growing product portfolios
  • Typical capacity: 1,000 to 100,000 unique identification numbers)

Longer Prefixes:

  • Provide a smaller pool of available numbers and is generally intended for companies with a limited or stable set of products.
  • Typical capacity: 10 to 100 unique identification numbers)

What is a GTIN, and how does it relate to a "UPC"?

A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the correct technical terminology for the identification number used to uniquely identify a product. While many people use the term "UPC" interchangeably with the number itself, the UPC (Universal Product Code) is actually the specific barcode symbol seen on packaging.

The GTIN is the data stored inside that barcode. It is used in ecommerce listings and backend systems to manage inventory, pricing, and promotions.

What is the difference between product barcodes and coupon barcodes?

It is vital to use the correct barcode format for the correct purpose:

UPC Barcodes:

  • These are printed on physical product packaging and encode a GTIN, allowing retail point-of-sale (POS) systems to identify the product, retrieve pricing, and process checkout transactions.

GS1 DataBar:

  • GS1 DataBar is the primary and current GS1 barcode standard for retail coupons.
  • It holds more complex data such as expiration dates and offer codes, allowing for automated validation.

Why does unique identification matter beyond couponing?

Accurate GTINs are the backbone of your entire operation. While they are essential for validating which product a coupon applies to, they are also critical for:

Production & Packaging:

  • Ensuring the right labels reach the right products.

Organizational Needs:

  • Managing internal databases and logistics.

Supply Chain Visibility: Tracking products from the manufacturer to the shelf.

  • We recommend carefully auditing how many GTINs you will need to ensure your products are ready for both the shelf and the digital marketplace.

What happens if I use non-standard or reused identifiers?

Using identifiers that are not globally unique, or reusing identifiers from past products, can disrupt automated coupon processing. This may lead to incorrect discount applications, rejected redemptions, or delays caused by manual review.

GS1 Standards support consistent, globally unique identification, helping reduce errors, limit fraud risk, and ensure smooth data exchange between brands, clearinghouses, and retailers.

Are GS1 Prefixes only for large brands?

No. GS1 Standards provide a common language for businesses of all sizes. Whether you are a small startup or a global corporation, using a GS1 Company Prefix enables automation, reduces risk, and supports long-term scalability. Most major retailers and e-commerce platforms now require GS1-based identification as part of their onboarding process.
